Duplicate Content Rejections: Re-uploads, Near-Identical Releases and Repeated Tracks

Updated 2026-10-21 · 4 sources

Short answer

Stores treat the same audio delivered more than once as spam or duplicate content: re-uploads with slightly different titles or artists, the same album with a rearranged track list, near-identical compilations, and repetitive short tracks. Release one canonical version, give genuine new versions a distinct version title and their own ISRC, and take an old release down before redelivering it elsewhere.

What the platforms say

  • Apple hides Repeated Submissions: copies with slightly different titles or artists, rearranged track lists, near-identical greatest hits, and compilation or holiday albums with similar track lists [1].
  • Apple hides snippets or repetitious tracks used repeatedly across releases [1].
  • Spotify's spam filter targets mass uploads, duplicates and artificially short tracks [2].
  • Distributors reject releases that are still live through another distributor [3].

Doing versions the right way

Different versions are fine when they're labelled. Apple requires unique track titles per artist on an album and asks you to tell versions apart in parentheses or brackets [1]. Each distinct recording gets its own ISRC, and the same recording keeps its ISRC [4]. See version titles.

FAQ

Can I release the same song as a single and on the album?

Yes, that's a normal release plan. Use the same recording and the same ISRC on both.

Does a remaster count as a duplicate?

Not when it's labelled. Apple asks for the remastering year in the version, e.g. "2017 Remastered Version".
